The Eighties

The Eighties

In 1980 & 81 I had the privilege of graduate work at Ohio University. The degree culminated in a thesis show entitled "Signs & Symbols: A Family Portrait". Each work involved a depiction of objects (symbols) and signs portraying my relationship with a particular family member. Objects were rendered realistically, while the signs were hard-edge, solid color shapes - all terminating in abstract collages.

Upon returning to Oxford, I continued the collage format of large realistic partial images. This group of works evolved out of an interest in the communal society better known as the "Shakers". Work was shown in a one-man show at Middletown Fine Arts Center, Middletown, Ohio.

In 1986 I began to explore the possibilities in another area of interest - fishing, more specifically, lures. Work began by composing and photographing various combinations of overlapping images (lures). My intent was to create a conversation - the lures talking over their own 'strategy'. Once a desired composition was arranged, it was photographed, projected and painted. (oils, bristle brushes, canvas)
